How Music Saved My Mortal Soul

I don’t even want to think about where I’d be without music. It provided me with a reliable source of relief from all the ugliness and disappointment and confusion. It gave me so many beautiful moments in between, for my soul to get a glimpse of its own light. Without it I’d be beyond psychological repair, probably addicted to heroin, if alive at all. I cannot overstate the importance of music in my life.

The power of music is that it can create feelings within you. The creator of the song has a specific effect and meaning they’re going for and when it hits right- it hits GOOD. There is nothing like it. That deep feeling of resonance. There is definitely something of the cosmic order happening there that science can’t explain yet. It’s like your soul knows it belongs here somehow.

It’s such a beautiful experience to know that you’re not alone in the world, even though you might feel alone in your life. It cuts through all your bullshit about being the only one who’s felt like that, which can often really add a layer of heaviness to an already terrible feeling. It’s so kind of every artist who shares and offers us respite in their alchemy. Art is alchemy. You took something and made it another thing that someone else can feel. Being on the receiving end of that is fucking amazing.

For many of us, it’s the most kindness and understanding that we receive during times we most need it. If you’re one of those people, I’m right there with you. Sometimes it can feel lonely but I like to think that it is not lonely, it’s just beautiful and loneliness is an illusion of the ego.

It’s incredibly powerful and I’m grateful everyday for this magical thing we call music. My becoming a songwriter started with me simply loving songs so intensely. As I’m discovering through the conversations on the Self-Help Songwriter Podcast, that is the case for many.

Push Nothing. "I did it MY WAY"

The best thing I learned in Vienda Maria’s business course Her Way was to surrender to the energy of my business. If you do it right, the entire process is one that grows you spiritually. It awakens you to your own subtleties.

For example, when you’re beginning to feel a bit bitter, or like your work is going unappreciated, that is a sign something is internally off. The thing is- you’re not doing anything for the reaction from others, even though you might think you do. Everything you do is simply to express your highest self and bring your vision to fruition. You truly, honestly, do not care about how much recognition you get. Sure, it’s nice, it’s really nice, but it’s just icing on the cake.

What success actually feels like is to be in total integrity. That’s where it starts and ends. It’s complicated when you’re not even sure which values are your own and which you just passively collected through your life experience. Especially those of us who are empathetic will really fight with this- confusing other people’s opinions or fears with their own. So I believe that even though we say we’re scared of judgment- I hypothisize that this is simply a decoy thought. I think what we’re actually scared of is not living our highest expression, but that is just less obvious and less discussed.

I know this from personal experience. The thing is, I’m not really afraid of anything. I feel pretty optimistic in general about how things work. BUT sometimes I get confused and start subconsciously trying to emulate people I admire or am jealous of. It eventually will emerge into my awareness in the form of feeling uneasy, unsure, like “what am I doing?” Now I know this is all just a signal that I need to slow down, relax and find my center again. When I’m engaging with the world from my center, then I am easy breezy:)

Thanks to HERWAY, I know what to do when this happens. I know how to tune into myself. This feminine and relaxed way of running a business is the only way that I can be successful. I know this because I am SO efficient and productive when I am relaxed. There is no possibility for burnout. That’s how you build a business that is sustainable, and not fall victim to the stress epidemic.
